Ipod Virus

| | Comments (2) | TrackBacks (0)

Sorry if I'm late posting this, been a bit busy at work to notice the outside world for a while.

Apple has shipped out a batch of Ipods preloaded with some interesting software, a Windows Virus

While there are very few reported cases of it happening, it's an interesting predicament for a company like apple to find itself in. But in perfect marketing form, they have let this be an opportunity to highlight themselves with the following quote:

The iPod nano, iPod shuffle and Mac OS X are not affected, and all Video iPods now shipping are virus free. As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it.

RAGE... BUILDING...

So, a group in Germany is doing a Web Platform War in order to compare teams developing web applications in different frameworks/stacks/platforms.

Great, right? Well, they are only allowing certain platforms in there, and where are the Perl ones? According to them:

We have been considering Perl as one of the platforms to be admitted to the contest. So far, we have decided against it because we believe that too few professionals use it professionally for us to hope to get enough requests for admittance for the Perl platform.

Ok, that has to be one of the worst statements I've seen about Perl in a long time, and man do I see a lot of dumb ones.

Do folks who enjoy their frameworks (rails, django, etc..) really believe that somehow there are that few Perl developers. Do python bigots, ruby devotees, PHP clones, Java Jerks really think that Perl is some dead language, incapable of Web Development. Seriously.

I'm sure that many of the folks I know around here, even those that hate Perl, would agree that there is a large professional community of Perl folks. That it's not a dead language by any means. And I'm sure that many of us agree that considering Web Development as a premier focus for "Professional" work is a rather limiting case.

And all this is part of the Open Source meets Business conference in Germany. Too bad I can't go. :) Even if it is just web development.
