So, a group in Germany is doing a “Web Platform War”:http://www.plat-forms.org/faq.htm in order to compare teams developing web applications in different frameworks/stacks/platforms.

Great, right? Well, they are only allowing certain platforms in there, and where are the Perl ones? According to them:

??We have been considering Perl as one of the platforms to be admitted to the contest. So far, we have decided against it because we believe that too few professionals use it professionally for us to hope to get enough requests for admittance for the Perl platform.??

Ok, that has to be one of the _worst_ statements I’ve seen about Perl in a long time, and man do I see a lot of dumb ones.

Do folks who enjoy their frameworks (rails, django, etc..) really believe that somehow there are that few Perl developers. Do python bigots, ruby devotees, PHP clones, Java Jerks really think that Perl is some dead language, incapable of *Web Development*. Seriously.

I’m sure that many of the folks I know around here, even those that hate Perl, would agree that there is a large professional community of Perl folks. That it’s not a dead language by any means. And I’m sure that many of us agree that considering Web Development as a premier focus for “Professional” work is a rather limiting case.

And all this is part of the “Open Source meets Business conference”:http://www.heise.de/veranstaltungen/2007/ho_osb/en/ in Germany. Too bad I can’t go. 🙂 Even if it is _just_ web development.

  1. C’mon, Jayce^, why do all the other guys get to be nasty “bigots”, “clones” and “jerks”, but we Rubyists only get to be benign “devotees”? I believe the en vogue pejorative nowadays (at regarding Railsers) is “fanboi”.

  2. Of course, I’m in a *pissy* mood after reading that. Anyways, fan*boi* is intersting, since Boi means BULL :-p

I’m sure most folks that know me know that I have high regards for my friends and their affections to other languages, but this is my blog, and I’ll whine if I want to…
